Eleanor Pearson 20 July 2015 Jury Justice on Trial
Twelve jurors deliberate on a murder trial outcome. At the beginning of the play 11 are convinced of a guilty verdict. As the drama unfolds, it becomes apparent that almost every juror brings to the table his own share of prejudice and personal baggage.
Originally a teleplay, Twelve Angry Men was written by Reginald Rose in 1954. |

Beilby said it was testament to Rose’s craftsmanship that the play still resonated with today’s audiences.
“It’s not called Twelve Angry Men for nothing,” Beilby said.
Even so he described his own part as “a listening role”, which gradually builds up to a moment.
“It’s really interesting to convey the journey through actions, not just dialogue.” He added that since all jurors are on stage for the duration of the play, it was vital to be present in each role right throughout.
“It’s not about the lines, it’s who the audience connects with,” Beilby said. He said blocking the 13 cast-member production had been tricky on Pymble Players’ intimate stage, and had taken time. Some of the cast travelled from as far away as the Central Coast and the Sutherland Shire to rehearsals on the North Shore. Beilby said that was a reflection on the calibre of the production, and the respect the players had for director Nanette Frew. |
“People are really going to enjoy this play. It will make them think and take them on a journey. It’s a drama, but there’s humour within this-it’s a really great script, a great cast and a great director.”
Beilby, an I.T. teacher at Epping Boys High School, joined Pymble Players in 2007 on the production Rumours.
