Eleanor Pearson 31 July 2016 When Cathy met Jamie
Five years ago Cathy met Jamie. Cathy was a small town girl from North-Western USA, with a dream of becoming a Broadway actress. Jamie was a confident Jewish New-Yorker, who had always wanted to be a writer. Roll back the years…it’s the end of their relationship. But for Jamie we see the relationship moving forward from its beginnings, while Cathy is caught up in analysing what went wrong, at the end of the relationship. By the end of the musical Jamie is at the end of the relationship, while Cathy is back at the beginning. Confusing? Well, Lane Cove Theatre Company president and director Lochie Beh always had a vision for The Last Five Years – A Song Cycle, and a dream of bringing it to local audiences.

“I had the opportunity to see the show,” Beh said. “It was written in 1999 (by Jason Robert Brown) so it’s a relatively new musical… This show is something of modern times. The music is not old worldly.”
“A lot of times men look from the beginning to the end of a relationship, and that’s it. Women tend to analyse how things began to go wrong. At the start Cathy is broken because she’s at the end of the relationship…It’s completely psychological. Throughout, you see both of them on stage, sometimes they are mentally there, but not physically, and vice versa.”

To designate the differing female and male perspectives, Cathy begins the journey wearing black, while Jamie is in white, by the end of the show Cathy is in white and Jamie wears black.
Beh’s concept for the show also encompassed a theatrical experience that was in the round. “I wanted to take the audience on that rollercoaster journey of emotions with the cast and have them feel what the characters feel.” “In the St Aidan’s performance space you have the intimacy of being in their apartment at intimate moments.” Beh said the best thing about the rehearsal process so far had been the ability of the cast to translate his ideas to the stage. |
“I’ve had goose-bumps watching them before the show has even started.”
